Maintainability

A maintainable service can be changed with low risk. In the Designer, maintainability depends on the process model and data structures being easy to follow, custom code staying disciplined and small, and the people who didn't build the service being able to safely support or extend it later.

Why it matters

The biggest risk for long-term maintainability is hidden complexity. This often appears as unclear process models, inconsistent naming, and business-critical logic embedded in undocumented scripts.

Every hour spent decoding an unclear model or an undocumented script is an hour not spent on the next feature. Low maintainability compounds over a project's lifetime: small, cheap changes turn slow and risky, and knowledge stays locked in whoever originally built the service.
